Finite Element Analysis of CVN 21 Hull
Modeling and Simulation (M&S) tools have been employed in the past for the analytical modeling of the CVN-76. The CVN-76 model was originally run with Version 64 of MSC.NASTRAN. The modal analysis model ran for 5 days, producing two solution modes. This was an extraordinary amount of time for a limited amount of solutions.
Accordingly, the NAVSEA 05P, in an effort to provide a more comprehensive and efficient solution for the CVN-78, sought an updated M&S capability that can address the required increased grid resolution estimated to be four times greater. NAVSEA 05P has requested the assistance of the Best Manufacturing Practices Center of Excellence (BMPCOE/WILLCOR) and its partner MSC Software, Inc., to provide the analytical capabilities needed using the BMPCOE/WILLCOR Engineering Analytical Computing Network (BEACON) and the latest version of MSC.Nastran. Initially, BMPCOE will provide the required analytical support to verify the capability and approaches to analyzing complex Carrier models of multiple grids. Based on the results of this initial effort, NAVSEA 05P may require additional analytical support using BEACON capabilities.
BEACON is a LINUX Cluster running 32 processors using AMD Opteron 64-Bit Processors with a significant amount memory and disk space. MSC's MasterKey license is currently installed providing access to all of MSC latest software releases. A number of large MSC.Nastran analyses have successfully been run on the system.
